Steps to hire a maid in Malaysia: your questions answered

The official steps to hire a maid in Malaysia, from s.60K approval and the VDR to FOMEMA and PLKS, with sources. Ask us on WhatsApp.

This guide is published by Maids in Malaysia, the trading name of Agensi Pekerjaan Genesis Life Care Sdn Bhd, a maid agency holding PEA Licence B No. 1681. In short, the official order is: approval under section 60K of the Employment Act 1955, a Visa With Reference (VDR), her visa through MyVISA, arrival on a 30-day Special Pass, the FOMEMA medical within 30 days, then her PLKS. The Act says an employer of a foreign domestic employee must tell the Director General within 30 days of employing her. Whether this applies to a household employer is being checked. Each answer gives its official source and the date we last checked it. Your family is the helper's legal employer, never one of our group companies.

What are the steps to hire a maid in Malaysia?

The Immigration Department's (JIM) Malay page lists approval under section 60K of the Employment Act 1955 as the first step. JIM then sets these steps: the Visa With Reference (VDR) application, her visa at the Malaysian mission abroad, the FOMEMA medical within 30 days of her arrival, then her PLKS. The Act says an employer of a foreign domestic employee must tell the Director General within 30 days of employing her. Whether this applies to a household employer is being checked.

Our step-by-step guide to hiring a maid walks through each official step.
